  Prologue

  Commander Manha Ayre

I fought hard. I pushed my fighting staff toward my opponent. Sweat was pouring down my blue skin. But I was winning. I swiped the staff in the air; it crashed with my opponent’s.

“Good work, but not good enough,” I said as I quickly pulled the staff around and swiped at him, taking him down. He fell to the ground.

  Cheers erupted around me.

“And that is how it is done, Itions,” I said with a grin. They all cheered louder and then I bowed. I was in the practice ring on our new base on Ionia. It was the perfect place for me to show off, as I liked to do. No one was better fighting than I was. I was the damn best, always undefeated.

“Commander! I will take on your next challenge,” an Ition soldier said, coming into the ring.

“I am more than willing to accept that offer,” I said stretching and putting the staff behind my shoulders, giving myself a good stretch.

“You will? This is your fifth fight straight today. Don’t you want to rest?” another soldier said.

“No, I’m ready. I’m always ready,” I grinned.

Then I took a battle position on the floor. The soldier came at me hard and fast, growling. Swipe, block, crash. We fought. He was good. I allowed him to get the better of me, but only for a few minutes, just to make things interesting.

But I was getting bored, so I showed him what I could do. I went after him with all my skill and knocked him to the ground immediately. The crowd cheered again. I ran around the ring showing off.

“Commander Ayre!” a soldier shouted coming in.

“What is it? Are you my next challenge?” I asked.

“No. Leader Evex Ein has requested your immediate presence in his chambers!”

The smile fell from my face, and I dropped the staff on the ground. “Tell him I’m on my way.”

  “Yes, sir!”

I ran to the side of the ring and grabbed a towel and began to wipe the sweat off my body as I grabbed the top of my uniform. I ran out of the practice arena and into the daylight. I pulled on my top as I jogged over to the large tower building.

I went up to the top chambers and was in front of my leader in minutes.

“You wanted to see me, Leader Evex Ein?” I asked as I walked into the chambers of the Alva Clan leader of the Ition race.

“Yes, you are my most trusted commander. You are brave, and yes, you are reckless and put yourself in danger when no one else will, but that is the kind of Ition I need right now. I have a mission for you. Are you interested?” he said.

I smiled. “It sounds like a very dangerous mission; just my speed, in fact. I’m in!”

“I thought you would be, Commander. Now listen closely,” he said.

  “Yes, sir.”

“As you know, the cold war with the humans of Earth has escalated. The Yinta Clan have only made things worse. Now, it is said they have captured a human female from Earth. She is of great importance,” he said.

“Will they ever stop their need to start a war?” I asked with anger brewing up inside of me.

“They wish to defeat our clan and striking up a war with the humans would cause our relations with Earth to falter. This is all part of their plans.”

“What do you need me to do, Leader Ein?”

“This human female is the daughter of a very important councilor of Earth. She must be returned to Earth unharmed,” he said.

I knew where he was going with this. I was ready for what was going to be the most dangerous mission of my entire life as an Ition soldier.

“I want you to steal the human female from the Yinta Clan and take her safely back to Earth,” he said.

I took a deep breath and pushed my chest out. “I accept this mission. I will not fail.”

“I know that you will not. The circumstances are difficult. If you fail and she is harmed by the Yinta, the humans will retaliate. If you succeed in taking her from the Yinta but do not succeed in getting her back to Earth, then the humans will retaliate against us, the Alva Clan. You must… you must succeed, Commander.”

  “I will.”

“Good. I want you to meet with communications. They have everything that we know so far about where this human might be,” he said.

I gave him a salute and was ready to embark on the most dangerous mission any Ition had ever done… and it was all mine.

  Karina Nolin

I’d had enough of this crap! I looked at the mess of papers on my desk, going through missing person reports. There had been strange happenings in the last year. Women had gone missing from the capital city of Menkara without a trace. I was an investigator and had made it my business to figure out what was going on. It wasn’t my job, but I needed to know.

I had skills. I was trained as a soldier to fight and to fly, but I wasn’t a soldier. My father was on the council, and he insisted I learn these skills. What was once fun as a young girl though sparked something inside of me. I wanted to do more than just have a desk job. I hungered for action and adventure.

“Nothing makes sense here. I’m not going to find anything sifting through these papers,” I said to myself.

I was frustrated. I went to my kitchen and poured myself a cup of strong black coffee. I walked out onto the terrace and looked out over the constant buzz of the capital city of Menkara. It was night time, and the lights of flying vehicles and the neon of buildings made a constant glow.

“Are all of you out there somewhere?” I said looking at the city landscape.

“Or are you out there?” I said looking up at the night sky and at the stars.

I knew that I needed to talk to my father. I went back inside and put the coffee down. I pulled off my black satin robe and slip and pulled on jeans, boots, and a sweater and pulled my red hair into a ponytail. I grabbed my bag and keys and walked out the door.

I stepped into the elevator and then it shot straight down in a matter of seconds: a highspeed elevator. I walked out into the lobby and out the door.

The smell of street food from carts hit me. It smelled good and was what I preferred, but there was no time for that now. I walked into the hovering train car of public transportation. It shot forward fast in a half-flying half-hovering mot
ion. I got out at my stop.

I looked up at the massive tower building. It was white and glowing. It was the capital building and where the council was seated.

I made my way inside. Even at night, I had special access because of my father. I made my way up to his chambers.

“It has been too long. They have all been missing for too long. We can't just sit here; we have to do something,” I walked back and forth in the council chambers of my father, Councilor Bradley Nolin. It was night time. The city noise around us was almost deafening in the moment. I always loved to listen to the noise of the city of Menkara, the capital of Earth, but right now it seemed like it was trying to silence me.

“I know, Karina, but what can we do? It is Vilox’s call, not our own,” my father said.

“We are worried about the missing women also. You are not the only one.”

“Everyone is worried but no one is doing anything about it. We need to take action. I need for Vilox to approve my mission. I have learned to fly; I am good at it. I am just going to get intel.” Why did I feel like I was the only one making sense here? Women from Earth had been going missing for months now. The Yinta Clan were trying to invade the Earth systems. We had to evacuate or try to stop it. Since we were a peaceful colony of humans that only participated in the cold war with the Itions, evacuation was our only option. But no one was trying to get answers as to what was really going on. I was tired of the way the council just lightly treaded around the subject.

The Itions were known to be ruthless creatures, and the ones who were working under the name the Yinta Clan had one goal: to invade and conquer as many planetary systems as they could, raping them of resources. Our system seemed to be next, and we thought they were stealing human females to start a war. Of course, there were groups of alien armies that had fought them across the system for decades, but most of them had lost or continued fighting in a stalemate until they were exhausted.

We had always thought that we were safe, but the Yinta Clan had its sights on us.

“Father, you know as well as I do that if the Yinta Clan are a true threat that they could be the ones taking women from Earth. I don’t know why they would do it, but it can’t be good. We need to know everything we can before they invade,” I said slamming my fist on his desk.

“Calm down, Karina. Sometimes your passion scares me. Why can’t you follow in your father’s footsteps and be a councilor in the making? You are more soldier than you are councilor,” he said coming toward me and putting his hands on my shoulders.

“I am who I am. I cannot help it. I cannot sit still and idle. I feel like the answers are out there waiting for us. We have to go get them!” I said.

“There is news!” Vilox said, running in. He was frantic.

“What is it? Tell us!” I said.

“There is news from the asteroid belt,” he said.

“What is it?” my father asked.

“It is said that a group of Vinop merchants landed with news about human females somewhere in the galaxy,” he said.

“What? How can that be?” my father said.

“I do not know, but it is also said that the Yinta Clan and the Alva clan have begun to fight against each other,” Vilox said.

“That is good news for us. If the Yinta Clan and Alva are fighting then it will keep them occupied and they won't fight against us or try to conquer us. At least it will be a distraction and buy us more time,” I said.

“There is more. It is said that Evex Ein has taken a wife: a human wife.”

We all grew silent. Was it possible? Was it possible that he had forced a human female to become his wife?

“No, it can't be,” I said.

“The description of this female matches a human, but this news has traveled from one mouth to another over and over again. Who knows how much the information changed by the time it got to us.”

“That is it. I must go to find out more. Vilox, you must allow me to go to the asteroid belt. You must approve my mission now. We need to know for sure. Poor human female; I cannot imagine her being forced to be the wife of such a ruthless alien creature. It must be horrible. We must get her back, whoever it is.”

  “And we will…” he said.

“No, you cannot go,” my father said.

“I must go, father. The asteroid belt is full of merchants that do not trust Earth men and only see them as spies and soldiers. It has to be me,” I said.

“I assume Vilox here has given you the message already,” Councilor Kector said walking in.

“Yes, that Evex Ein has a human wife now. You know that it must be one of ours, one of the missing.”

“You must let me go on my mission, Leader Vilox. It is more important now than ever. I need to go get the intel myself and find out what is going on. They will know things we do not. I ask again for your permission to go there. I must be there to dig around and find the information,” I said. I waited for an answer. He was quiet. All eyes were looking at him, and my father was restraining anger, but Vilox was higher than him and whatever Vilox said would go.

“I must say this is a time where we need as much information as possible. But I will expect a daily report from you, Karina. Sent to the communications here. I don't want you to gather information and wait until you return to tell us. The information might be very timely; daily reports, Karina.”

“Yes, of course. Anything you say, Leader Vilox. I have your permission then?”

“Get some sleep; you will leave in nine hours.”

“Yes! You will not regret this. Thank you,” I said.

“I hope that I will not,” Vilox said.

“I will find out,” I said.

“Karina, why do you do this to me?” my father said coming to me.

“I am sorry, father. Do not worry. I will return,” I said.

“The Yinta Clan are out there. I can’t let you go.”

“I will find out what has happened to the women. Stay strong,” I hugged him.

With my orders approved, I went to my small bungalow. I took a hot shower and laid down in bed. I could see the two floating asteroids that served as moons, satellites that floated around us on the map. The noisy city of the night seemed to grow louder. Now I would miss it. I allowed it to lull me into sleep.

The next morning, I woke up and packed for my mission. I braided my long red hair down the side of my head. I put on black fitted flight suit with many pockets. I stuffed them with tools and various pocket knives. A compass and a guide as well as a small communicator also went inside these pockets. I pulled on an olive-colored tank top and tucked it into my pants. Then I pulled on a green knitted sweater that fit snuggly. It was cold in space. I pushed my black hooded cloak into my bag that had a fresh pair of socks, another tank top, and rolled up pants. It would really be all that I needed. I went to the weapons facility and grabbed one small blaster gun that I hung on my belt. A larger one with a strap went across my body but would be set aside to charge when piloting the small ship. By noon, I was ready to go. I said goodbyes to my father and friends.

I sat in the small Aronian ship; it wasn't used for trade. It was used for quick missions to carry one or two people from one system to another. I was using it to fly out of the Earth system and go to the asteroid belt.

I sat in the pilot chair going through checks for the launch. I remembered everything perfectly. I had flown many times. This would be different.

  “You are cleared for launch.”

“Copy that and confirmed,” I said.

I took a deep breath. I was doing this. I was really doing this, and I was doing it alone.

“I am coming for you. I will find out where you are,” I whispered to myself.

  “Launching in three, two, one…”

I hit the engines, and the ship roared straight out into the atmosphere. Within seconds, the sky turned black. I was in space. It wasn't my first time, but it was my first time steering the ship out of my home system. I said a little praye
r and started my journey into the unknown.

  Chapter One

  Commander Manha Ayre

One day later, we were in deep space.

I was on a mission. A very important mission. It was one that could put the Alva Clan in a better position than the Yinta Clan. Leader Evex Ein sent me out to find a captured human female. That was my mission. But it was a problem in this area of the galaxies. Humans were not known to occupy any planets in the area. The Earth system was far away so I would have to find out where the Yinta Clan abducted this human from.

So I would have to find another place where humans were said to visit.

“Commander Ayre, General Mez was seen in the vicinity of Gioro.”
