  Prologue

  Commander Kandyr

“Commander, don’t go that way. The mines are active in that spot! If you step on one you will be blown to bits!” the soldier scout shouted at me.

I stopped. I looked ahead at the dirt fields in front of me. It was an old battle field from the first months of our invasion of Earth. I had picked this region to go on a mission on purpose. It was possible that I would not return to my new home with my group. I contemplated moving ahead in the hot zone and allowing one of these mines to take me. I wanted it to put me out of my misery.

“This way, Commander. We’ve heard of a possible rebel base ahead,” the scout said to me.

His voice pulled me out of my daze. Only one thing kept me from walking out on that hot field and allowing a mine to take me, and that was her.

I closed my eyes and saw her beautiful face, the human female that had stole my heart. She had taken everything from me. Before her, I was the most loyal Dain there was. I did not break the rules. Once she came into my life, all of that was gone.

“I am coming your way,” I said over the radio to the scout.

I turned away from the mines and headed in the other direction, the safe path. Even though I was flirting with death, I knew that I wanted to get back alive. I needed to see her. I had left her on purpose, she was driving me insane. But now every moment that I was away from her, I only grew more miserable.

“We only have three more days out here, then we will be sent back to Command,” a soldier said, walking next to me.

“Who told you that, Soldier?” I asked.

“I heard it from the Sergeant earlier today,” he said.

  “Three days…” I said.

In three days, I would be sent back home. I would see her again, but did she want to see me? I had confessed my love to her, and she did not respond the way I wanted her too. Maybe I shouldn’t return at all.

“All units move out! We have hot territory here! We are under fire! Go! Go!” The orders came over the communication piece in my ear. Suddenly I was pulled from my deep fog. I grabbed my blaster gun and aimed it, running with the other soldiers toward the sound of gunfire. This was not like me. I was always the soldier that was focused and sharp. I didn’t let anything get in the way of staying on track during my missions, but that was before I met her. That was before the human female Sabine entered my life, my mind, and my heart. She would be the end of me.

  Chapter One

  Sabine

It was dark. I ran as fast as I could-as fast as my trembling legs could carry me. I had to reach the tree, the one marked with the X. But I couldn't see where I was going. I wasn't planning on running back to my home. I usually had a well-marked trail to follow, but I had to go off the trail because of them. Their growling echoed through my mind. My heart was beating so fast, I thought it would explode. The sound of the growling of the damn graptors made me feel like they were all around me. I couldn't exactly tell which way they were coming from. But it didn't matter, the only thing that mattered was that I could not stop. They could not catch me because if they did, they would kill me. I would be ripped to pieces in a matter of seconds, the worst way to die.

It was always a liability when you lived in the wilderness the way I did. But it was either live in the wilderness away from the Dains and deal with the graptors, or live in the city and be captured by the Dains. There were many myths and stories surrounding what the Dains would do when they captured human females. I didn't know what was true and what was rumor. I only knew that I did not want to find out. So, I lived alone, in the wilderness, somehow managing to survive the last 2 years. I had been very careful, always aware of my surroundings. But this time I had been reckless. I was hunting a rabbit, desperate to catch something since I had not eaten in a over 2 days.. I went out at sunset, when the rabbits were active, to try to catch one. Sunset was darker than it used to be, because the Dains had scorched the sky with their chemical weapons. It was these chemical weapons that created the graptors. It somehow mutated the bears that lived in the area into these horrifying creatures. Now, they were after me.

“Dear God, please…” I whispered to myself under my heavy breathing as I ran.

Then I saw something in front of me. It wasn't my tree, my home that was marked with an X. This had an orange flag tied over it. I knew exactly what that meant. If I could just make it there, I might last through the night.

I slid toward the flag, the way I used to slide into home base when I played baseball in junior high, before the Dains invaded Earth. The growling was growing louder and louder and I could hear their monsterous paws against the forest ground, thundering. My hands pushed away the leaves and twigs frantically.

“There it is.” I grabbed the iron handle and pulled up. The trap door lifted and I jumped inside into a dark hole. The door fell hard and closed and I latch locked it. I did this just in time. The door overhead trembled and shook as the graptors bounced on top of it. I could hear their claws scraping at the door.

Holding onto the latchwith all of my weight was not easy to do. I was thin and didn’t have a lot of weight to began with. My eyes shut tight. I whispered a silent prayer, hoping they could not pull the door open. The growling was so loud, there must be at least three of them, I thought. I was glad that the door was made of metal and not wood. They would break right through wood.

I was not sure how much time passed. I just hung on to that door, letting my body dangle from the handle. The hole was dark, empty. There were a series of these hiding pits throughout the forest. They were put there originally to hide from the Dains, but now they were mostly used to hide from the graptors. I was glad that I had come upon this one and that it was still marked.

The growling grew quiet. I could tell that one graptor had left, the other was still clawing at the ground, trying to dig in. Its heavy breathing blew against the dirt. I wished and prayed that it would go away, trying to stay as quiet as I could.

The only thing that I could do would be to wait them out until morning. The graptors were known to not give up on their prey, they would stay in the vicinity for hours. So, I had no choice but to stay in the hole, at least
until sunrise.

It was strange that this was my life now. This was what my life had become. I went from growing up on a farm in the countryside of Illinois, an hour outside of Chicago, to this. Growing up, my town was very rural with a small school system. It had been comfortable, if a bit boring. But I would take boring now any day over my current situation.

When the alien invasion happened, my father and brother went to join the war effort. They never returned. When the Dains arrived in the area where we lived, my mother and I went underground. But she didn't last long. It wasn't long before I was on my own and only 19 years old. In the years since then I had been on my own,At first, I was jumping from one group of humans to another, hiding out, but the Dains always found usand killed them. Somehow I always managed to escape, leaving death behind, and before long I knew that it was safer to be alone. The aliens searched for large groups of humans, and if I was alone it was not as easy to track me. So, I went deeper and deeper into the wilderness and made a home for myself. The isolation was almost unbearable, but besides the graptors, it was fairly safe…or so I thought.

  Chapter Two

  Commander Kandyr

  “Where are we?” Jate asked.

“Out in the shit,” Priah responded. They all laughed, all three of the soldiers that I was out on patrol with.

“Keep alive. Look sharp. The graptor creatures are in this area,” I said as I sat behind the wheel and drove the patrol unit deep into the wilderness.

“Damn graptors. I didn't ask to be moved to wilderness patrol. I prefer the city,” Jate said.

“Don't we all. It's a joke to be assigned out here in the wilderness,s if we are going to find human females, just wondering the woods, with the graptors chasing them all the time. I'm telling you, all of the human females are in the city. Not out here,” Priah said.

“That may be, but we have an assignment, and we must stick to it,” I said.

“At least there's not a lot of work involved. If you ask me we’re basically just going on a sightseeing tour of Earth,” Neevon said leaning back in his chair and comfortably putting his hands behind his head. Priah and Jate laughed.

“I did not think of it that way. I guess you have a point,” Priah said.

“Ain't nothing out here but a lot of trees,” Jate said.

I rolled my eyes at the unit that I was given. This was a new scouting unit. I had previously been in the city scouting the Great Lake shoreline, but two days ago I was transferred to a wilderness unit. I thought of it as a relief. I was getting bored of the city. We had conquered this great Earth, and eradicated most of the human population, and yet I had only seen a small portion of Earth. I wanted to see more of it and this was a way to do it. I was actually excited to get out into the wilderness. I was longing to see one of these creatures in person, the graptors that everyone spoke about. I was hungry for a little hunting and I was hungry for a little bit of danger. I had not fired my blaster gun in almost a year, as the war was long over. There were only small skirmishes here and there amongst the remaining humans, and a band of rebels that seemed only a myth to me. I needed some excitement. So, my eyes were open and observant to the surroundings, and I could only hope that we would find danger. I needed it and thrived on it. I was a Dain warrior, after all.

“I just want to be matched to a group already. I am sick of waiting. I fought in battle just like everyone else,” Priah said.

“Same here. I have been waiting two years, while those in my barracks are put in a group and given a human female wife of their own. It is complete bull crap. I have done my fair share of waiting as well,” Jate added.

“Well there's nothing that either of you can do about it. We are all sick of waiting,” Neevon added, “so stop your damn whining.”

“It is unfair. Everyone is chosen at random. There is no way to work the system. I should know, because I used to work in registration. There is no science to it,” Jate said.

“You worked in registration? Don't you have to be smart for that?” Priah teased him.

“Shut up. Yes, I worked in registration. But I couldn't handle being inside dealing with numbers and documentation. It is very boring and that’s why I asked to be transferred, topatrol the world of Earth. But I wasn't expecting to be put in the wilderness,” Jate said.

“Guess you have to be careful for what you wish for,” Priah laughed at him.

“That is true, but even though I'm out here in the middle of nowhere it is still better than dealing with documentation. It was very boring. Not to mention, it gets your jealousy level very high to be the one to match groups of soldiers so that they can go on to auction for a human wife. Having to do that process over and over when you are not the one that is getting a wife yourself cancan make you quite angry, as it did for me. So I left.”

“And how is this better? Being sent out on patrol to roundup human females for other Dain soldiers, not for yourself. I almost feel like this is worse. You're doing more work for someone else,” Neevon said.

“Yes, it’snot fair also. But at least this way I get to use my gun, and run around like the warrior that I am,” Jate said.

“Yes, that is true. I want to see one of these graptors in person. At least that will be fun,” Priah said.

“Yes, sector 386 is supposed to be filled with them. I want to see one as well. A soldier in my barracks saw a dead one that was hauled in on the back of a truck in to the city. I didn't get to see it, of course. He said it was really mean and big looking.”

“And to think, we are the ones that supposedly created them. The first chemical attack apparently mutated an Earth creature into these graptors. I believe they used to be called bears, but I could be wrong.”

“I thought they were called lions,” Jate said.

“No, I think it was definitely bears.”

“Be quiet. We are getting near the patrol area. Everyone charge their guns,” I said. I seemed to be the only one focusing on the mission. These three were all talk all the time. I wouldn't be surprised if a graptor ate one or all of them. They were not exactly the kind of soldiers I wanted watching my back. I needed soldiers that were focused on the mission, not focusing on their complaints and what they hadn’t been given yet. They sounded like a bunch of entitled pieces of shit to me. I cursed my luck that they were inthe unit with me. They had been the ones assigned to me, in one of the most dangerous sections of the wilderness.

“If this sector is the most dangerous, with graptors running wild, then what makes command central think that there are human females out here?. Human females are small and petite compared to us Dains, and they wouldn't last a minute,” Priah said.

I stopped the truck and turned it off. I turned and looked at them.

“That is exactly why they would be out here. Command thinks that human females would hide here because the abundance of graptors would keep us out. It would make us think that no human females would live here because of the graptors, and so they would use it as a hiding place from us. Our mission is to discover if that statement is true or false. I need you all to be on your best, soldiers. Not only are we scouting for human females, but we are in a position to be hunted by these graptors. Yes, we are bigger than humans, our almost 9 feet height compared to their six makes us a better fighter against these graptors, but we are still flesh. These graptors can still tear us apart. That is why we need to see them before they see us. Do I make myself clear?”

“Yes Commander,” all three of them said.

“Good, now guns armed. Get your packs on. I'm climbing on top to scout,” I said as I opened the door. I climbed on top of the truck and quietly closed the door. I stood on top of the truck making a slow circle, getting a view of the surroundings. It was morning, but the light was still dim. The sunlight barely came through the gray sky these days and the tall trees that the humans called pine trees limited the light from coming in even more. I used my electrical scope, looking in all areas. I didn't see or hear any movement. This was a go
od place to park and to leave the truck. I pulled out the map, planning on which direction we would head. I knocked lightly on the top of the truck for the soldiers inside. It was a signal letting them know that the area was clear. A few moments later the vehicle doors opened and they poured out.

“Which way are we heading, Commander?”

“North by Northwest. We will clear that section first. We will go 5 miles in, and then turn back to the truck and report to command if we can get a signal,” I said.

“Sounds good to me.” Priah said.

  “I’m ready,” Jate said.

“Let’s hunt some graptors,” Neevon said.

I jumped off the truck onto the soft ground. There were pine needles that were very thick, making it easy to see where anything had been tracking a trail. I quietly took the lead, while Priah took the rear. We were starting our patrol, the most dangerous Earth patrol that I had been on yet since the war. It was thrilling and I felt alive again. I was in my element.

  Chapter Three

  Sabine

Finally, it was quiet. I had felt like I had been in that hole forever. I couldn't sleep. I knew that the graptors could come back at any moment. So, I sat there with one hand on the latch, making sure that if one came, I would be ready. Hours went by. Suddenly a sliver of light landed on my hand. It was morning.
